About WA Healthy Business

WA Healthy Business originated from a pilot project developed with the cooperation of The Cancer Council Western Australia, Heart Foundation and Diabetes WA and was funded by Healthway. Tow of these health organisations combined their resources and expertise to help reduce the incidence of Australia’s leading chronic diseases.

Australia’s three chronic diseases are:

  1. Cancer
  2. Cardiovascular Disease (heart disease, stroke and diseases of the blood vessels)
  3. Diabetes

All three of these diseases share common preventable factors:

  • Poor diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excess body weight
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol

From July 2003 until August 2005 seven Western Australian workplaces participated in the pilot project for WA Healthy Business. This pilot project provided these seven organisations with the ability to identify the main health priorities for their employees and observe their working environment for physical activity, nutrition, smoking and sun protection. The workplace was selected because adults spend at least one third of their day at work therefore this environment has an influence on their life at home. The seven pilot study organisations planned, introduced and monitored their own workplace health promotion programs with support from the pilot project coordinator.

Since the pilot project ended WA Healthy Business has continued with its partnership of Western Australia’s three leading not-for-profit health organisations with assistance for research and evaluation by the University of Western Australia’s School of Population Health. However, the program no longer receives and funding from Healthway. WA Healthy Business is available for all WA workplaces including national organisations.

WA Healthy Business is primarily aimed at blue collar workplaces to improve the long term health outcomes of their employees although this comprehensive workplace health promotion program is suitable for all workplaces. It can also be adapted for remote workplaces, shift workers and organisations with work sites throughout Australia. Full details are available about the WA Healthy Business program in our colour brochure.

A range of packages are available to suit all sized businesses from six months to two years. These packages cater for worksites located in metro and remote areas and can also be tailored for shift workers. WA Healthy Business aim is to support Western Australian workplaces and their employees in the delivery of a workplace health promotion program by using a variety of strategies.
