Strategies
WA Healthy Business uses a variety of different methods or strategies to deliver its workplace health promotion program. Some strategies are designed to foster a health promoting environment as well as providing health information, educating the workplace about health issues, what it means to have a healthy workplace and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Other strategies serve to provide a team of workplace health coordinators from each work site with the skills and knowledge to plan and introduce their health program. The workplace health coordinators are also encouraged to monitor the progress of their health promotion program.
At the start of the program, client’s employees are invited to identify their health concerns and conditions and their expectations of a workplace health promotion program. In addition an assessment of the workplace facilities, vending machines and access employees have to healthy choices is conducted.
Here are some of the program strategies:
- Conduct a workplace profile using an employee survey and an environmental assessment of each work site from the WA Healthy Business client.
- Program development workshops for the workplace health coordinators based at each client’s work site or their multiple work sites.
- WA Healthy Business Coordinator to gather information from program development workshops to write health programs and policies based on the client's priority health areas and workplace profile.
- Information and resources in the Members only section of the WA Healthy Business website to assist with developing, implementing and evaluating their health program.
- Education sessions on health issues (onsite or DVD for remote work sites).
- Health resource folders for each employee containing brochures.
- A Health Bag for each employee with the first health resource folder.
- Monthly newsletters.
- Health posters for work sites distributed with each lot of folders.
- Case studies from pilot project for examples of successful strategies tried with other workplaces.
- Assistance from the WA Healthy Business Coordinator.
- Repeat of the employee health survey towards the end of the one and two year programs to compare with the initial results obtained at the start of the program and afterwards.
