Program Focus
WA Healthy Business is a comprehensive workplace health promotion program. It is modeled on workplace health programs from Canada and Britain.
For health promotion in the workplace to be successful, support from employees and management is vital. This involves:
- Asking employees what health concerns they have, for example:
What health issues are important and how they can be addressed at the workplace?
Do you think your manager/s have the capacity to make workplace organisational changes to improve health? - Conducting an assessment of the workplace facilities including the vending machines to see how these can be changed to provide employees with access to healthy choices.
- Using the surrounding environment eg, sporting facilities, parks
- Organisational culture eg. positive change in employee/manager attitude towards workplace health promotion.
- Skill development workshops to develop and introduce the health programs as well as ideas on how to monitor the progress of their new health initiatives.
- Writing health policies to support and reinforce the changes that employees and management want to make.
- Fostering a healthy workplace environment by increasing employees awareness of health issues and the importance of a healthy lifestyle with health education sessions, posters, monthly newsletters and health brochures.
For a healthy workplace environment it is important to develop a comprehensive workplace health promotion program with a variety of health strategies and policies.
The organisational structures, surrounding environment, workstations, the workplace culture and attitude of the workplace may be considered. This helps to ensure that businesses and organisations wanting to promote health consider changing or influencing workplace structures more than an individual’s behavior.
